Hip resurfacing surgery

Hip resurfacing is a bone-preserving procedure where a new surface (a “cap”) is placed over the top of the femoral head. With resurfacing, a stem is not placed into the femur, as is the case with total hip replacement. For this reason, hip resurfacing best enables to restore patient’s hip anatomy for optimal functional outcomes, allow a large femoral head to prevent dislocation, and ease further revision surgery. Resurfacing Hip Replacement is most suited to ‘younger’ active males (<65 years old).

Resurfacing got recently criticised because metallic surface bearings release metallic wear debris, which has been shown to sometime cause complications. This created a perception that all resurfacing hip replacements are unsafe, but this is not supported by data. There are many highly respected skilled surgeons who offer this approach with a very safe record.
